The Bridges

At the foot of the Gellért Hill one can admire what is possibly the most beautiful bridge of Budapest: the Elisabeth Bridge: Erzsebet hid.

It was built between 1897 and 1903, with a length of 290 m, and remained until 1926 the longest chain bridge of the world. It was completely torn down by the retreating Nazis during the Second World War. Just like all the other bridges in town, it was rebuilt between 1961 and 1964 by Pal Savoly, but this was the only one which did not maintain its original shape. In fact, it was built again on the pre existing pillars, but with a completely renewed shape and structure, much slimmer than the older one.

Bridges of Budapest

The Liberty Bridge, Szabadsag hid, is unique, with its oriental domes combining Art Nouveau with the architectural style of ottoman origins. The bridge was built between 1894 and 1896 on a 3-arcades iron structure.

The Bridge Petofi hid, on the southern edge of Grand boulevard was built between 1933 and 1937, whereas north of the Elisabeth Bridge can be admired the first bridge of Budapest : the Chain Bridge, Lanchid, which still preserves its original shape untouched. A bit further lies Margaret Bridge, Margit hid, which was built together with the Grand Boulevard between 1872 and 1876. It is 637,5 m long. Between 1899 and 1900 another transversal bridge was built, which connects Margit hid with Margaret Island, where, on the northern end, lies the Arpad hid built between 1941 and 1950.
