The Parliament of Budapest

The Parliament lies on one side of the Kossuth Lajos tér, overlooking the river Danube. It is 268 m long, and is towered by a 96 m high dome.

This splendid neo gothic building is embellished with external walls decorated with 88 statues representing heroes, captains and Hungarian kings. The main access (there are 27 entrances in total!) is preceded by a flight of steps with two bronze lions on both sides. In the middle of the palace stands the Capitol Room, where banquets are generally held, whereas the northern side was once the seat of the Upper Chamber, which hosts today conferences and congresses.

Parlamentsgebäude - Il Parlamento

In front of the Parliament Building stands Mihaly Karolyi’s statue, the Hungarian President of the Republic who ruled the country until march 1919, when the workmen revolution led by Bela Kun brought to the instauration of the Republic of Councils, which elected Garbai as president.
All around the Parliament raise other three monuments, one dedicated to Lajos Kossuth, chief of the revolution against the Austrian army in 1948-49; another one dedicated to the poet Attila Jozsef, and finally the monument to Francis II Rakoczi, who led the revolution against the Augsburg family in the XVIII century.
