Margit-sziget -Margaret Island

Opposite  Obuda on river Danube lies Margaret island, which is connected with the city through two bridges: Margaret bridge in the south and Arpad bridge in north.
The island is a marvellous park 2 kilometres long and 500 metres wide, and it is one of liveliest places in the city, particularly attended by Budapest citizens, that love to come here for a walk or to bathe.

In ancient times the island was occupied by the Romans, as some old rests prove, whereas in the Middle Age the knights of St John built a fortified monastery on the southern part, while in the middle of the island stood a monastery of Dominican nuns, where Margaret, the daughter of king Bela IV lived and died. This is where the island got its name from.

During the Turkish occupation most of the medieval constructions were destroyed, and the island was finally converted into a park. Some drilling works revealed the presence of a spa spring, something which contributed to turn part of the island into a climatic centre.
