The area of Pest around the ancient wall belt of the city (Belvaros), is called Small Boulevard. The walls were torn down in the XIX century to allow a better urban development of the city. The construction of this street which leads from Liberty Square to Andrassy ucta began toward 1870, when it was decided to connect the beloved city park of Varosliget, one of the favorite amusing spots for Budapest citizens, with the centre of Pest. And this is how this long street to the park originated, which was embellished in the course of the years with buildings and villas.
Two huge buildings open to the visitor’s view: at number 25 stands the Ballet Institute, Allami balettintezet, while at number 22 is the State Opera House, Magyar Allami Operahaz , respectively the temple of music and theatre.
On the upper part of the Andrassy ucta the street takes to the Heroes’ Square, Hosok tere, with its impressive size of almost 1 km, it resembles more a huge boulevard rather than a square.
On the right side of the square lies the Mucsarnok, the Art Gallery where temporary exhibitions are occasionally held, whereas on the left side is the Museum of Fine Arts, Szepmuveszeti Muzeu, which hosts the biggest figurative arts collection of the country.
But the main monument of the square, which is mostly worth a visit, is the Millennium Monument, Millenium emlekmu.
