Halaszbastia -The Fishermen's bastions

Following the restoration works in the Church of St Matthias it was thought necessary to embellish the surrounding part as well, with the additional purpose to challenge the architectural development of the neighbouring Pest.
In 1889 new bastions were built, with a panoramic terrace from where the visitors could enjoy the breathtaking view both over Buda and Pest. The construction took the name of  Halaszbastia, Fishermen’s bastions, since on that exact point a bunch of fishermen had made a stand against the invaders to defend the city.

Between the church and the bastion stands the Horse Monument of Stephen I, a beautiful bronze statue made by Alajos Srobl, with a pedestal embellished with low relief representing scenes of the kings' life. Both the church and the bastion were made by Frigyes Shulek.

Strolling around along the Bastion you get to the panoramic terrace, with a group of buildings behind which hide some ruins of gothic origins: the gothic arcades of the central nave of St Nicolas church, dating from the XIII century. In this wonderful context are held in summer concerts and open air events.
